I really enjoyed this project and think it was a perfect length for an interview. We only needed two good sound bites and was a short project that really summarized our journalism skills and also introduced us to final cut pro. I think it was a good end to the semester and allowed us to go out and interview people at our school and didn't take long to do. Using the equipment was fun and made us feel like we were actual news reporters. Overall i liked the project and would do another one.
The headline newscast project was a fun project which we wrote news stories and got to work in the studio to make almost professional looking news broadcasts. We wrote stories on many different topics happening right at the time to make an overall 2 minute 10 second broadcast. Working on an anchoring project in a professional news studio was very cool because it felt like we were real anchors. Also getting to do the other jobs in the studio for other groups and being behind the scenes was fun and a cool experience to learn how to do and do them. Overall the project was a good learning experience of how news broadcasts are made and getting to work all the jobs was a really cool experience.
The interview project was a project we had to do where we found a local expert at pretty much anything and were supposed to interview them about what they do, and make a news package out of it. I chose for this project my grandmother, Jane Sauer, who was a professional artist, and after that did many other things with art. One thing I definitely learned while making this project was how in all news stories, that because you have to make them relatively short, you end up excluding a lot of information and time from your interview in order to make it short enough to hold interest. It also goes to show that editing news packages is harder than you might think because you need to cut the interview out into sound bites, and blend them together without too noticeable of a cut, and you must have B-Roll covering the cuts. In terms of getting the actual footage itself, The main interview with Jane was probably one of the easiest parts of the project and was a definite success, however the supporting interview environment was a lot noisier and the audio quality of the interview was not as good. One of the biggest challenges for me was getting B-Roll. My main interview was at Jane's apartment not the place where I wanted to get B-Roll, so there wasn't an easy way to connect the Interview with the B-Roll, and I didn't have much time at the place. Overall it was a good project to do that had it's challenges for sure, but ended up being a good final project.
In editing on iMovie, there are many hidden tricks to make your news package look very proffesional and make it look like it was edited on a pro editing software. first thing to know are about the transitions. iMovie automatically puts a transition in between your video, to get rid of it, you have to click on it and change it to none. If you want to put b-roll over your footage, when putting the footage in, you have to click the illipses and choose the icon with video over the other video, if you do this the b-roll will automatically be muted however you can change that if you want a little bit of natural sound. those some of the main tjings we learned and can really improve your video.
The interview produces the sound that tells your story, making it the most important element of your news package. In class, we learned ways o make a good interview. In your news package, you will put B-Roll video over most of your interview, so the video quality of your interview isn't that important. The sound however, is very important so you will want to get very close to your subject, to a point where it is almost uncomfortable, because then you will have full audio. when interviewing, you don't want to start your questions with what, or why, you want to start them all with tell me about... and last thing, at the end, you should always ask them if there is anything else they would like to add, so that they can elaborate on their own, without restriction of the question.
The sound in a video is at least as important in a news package, or any video really, as the actual video. In a news story, you need the sound to tell the story of what is going on in the video, and to establish the natural sound that is in the place where the video was shot. To get a full story with good sound, You need to get close to your interviewing subject and get loud, full sound. You also need to capture the natural sound of the area and add in a quiet amount to your interview to help establish the setting of where the interview is going on. Your final project should have clean, crisp sound that really helps your video, not hurt it.
When making a news package, you obviously will need a subject to base it on. You will need to come up with a subject to make your news story on. We learned about thinking of a topic and what you will need to make your news package. First, you will need an expert in, or someone related to the topic. You also need a supporting person who is not an expert in the topic however has interest in the topic. You will then need to contact them and arrange an interview on them to ask about the topic
In this lesson we learned many small tips for shooting good video like the rule of thirds, B-Roll, and more. The rule of thirds says that the subject of a shot should not be placed in the center of the shot, but it should be in an outer third of the screen. Also, B-Roll is natural video that is overlaid on audio of an interview
In The Video Storytelling section of the course I am taking, we have learned about many aspects of how to tell your story with different types of video, angles, and shots. One aspect of visual storytelling is action/reaction. This differs if the shot is of what the story is showing/ the subject is doing, or how the people/environment is reacting. The main rule is that you have more reaction shots then action. you also want to have a large variety of shots and angles, changing to a new shot every 5 seconds or so to really show the entire area.
The I Am video was fun to make. I used iMovie trailer to put together a collection of pictures and text to tell you a little about me. One thing I didn't like about imovie trailers was that it did not allow me to add that many pictures. I had a lot more pictures that I was intending to put in. That however did not make too much of a difference and overall the I Am project was fun to make and iMovie trailer was easy and good to use.
